Read through this case study, and we’ll show you our process – and how you can achieve similar results.

Client overview

WriterBuddy is a forward-thinking company that leverages AI to help individuals and businesses write more efficiently.

The client’s website was brand new. And it’s no secret that SEO for new websites can be challenging, especially in the B2B space with established competitors.

 Their goals included:

  • To create an SEO advantage early in their business.
  • Rank for many fairly competitive keywords, e.g., acronym generator, elevator pitch generator, sentence rewriter, hook generator, Instagram caption generator, etc.
  • See the results ASAP to generate an ROI and use the profits to reinvest in their business.

Just like many innovative companies that need their focus elsewhere, the client had a few key challenges which made it tough for them to rank higher on Google (at least fast).

These were:

  • Having ZERO authority in the eyes of Google as they had a newly registered domain.
  • Having well-established players such as Copyai, Jasper, Writesonic, etc., as their competitors.
  • Trying to rank for buyer-intent keywords that list online writing tools, not blog posts. So, there wasn’t any way to improve the “Content Quality” in this case.
  • Targeting fairly competitive keywords (but not having any authority).

Though not an easy task, our process enables us to quickly tap into top news outlets and publishers – as you’ll see in just a moment.

What could be done

While they had a great business, there were some SEO challenges.

The main one?

Having zero authority in their niche.

So, we suggested they try to get a DR boost (obviously) to make their site look authoritative in Google’s eye.

As their technical SEO was pretty solid, and we couldn’t work on improving content – We suggested our PR backlink package that works magically fast to increase authority and rankings.

This package is designed to quickly tap into the world’s most prominent publishers and leverage their authority for your business.

Spoiler Alert: We managed to secure DR 70+ Links for an average price of $227 per link (for the client). This is less than Ahrefs’ estimate of the “average backlink”, and ours were DR 70+, including TechCrunch, PCMag, MSN, the week & More! (We’ll break this down later)

What exactly did we do

We analyzed the client’s niche and developed a comprehensive digital PR strategy. It focused on building high-quality contextual backlinks to boost search rankings. The key component of this strategy was a creative content campaign in the form of an infographic that explored the Global Investment Report on the AI Industry for 2021-2023.

Why an infographic report

Most SEO and PR companies pay mediocre sites to post their links. But if you want to get featured on top publishers like TechCrunch, PCMag, The Week, MSN & More — that simply won’t work.

These sites want to maintain their reputation as the best magazines & publishers in the world because that’s worth more than whatever SEO companies offer them.

Therefore, we take an innovative, organic, and creative approach to link-building.

We create world-class content and industry reports that the best publishers want to link to – so our clients can be recognized as industry leaders.

Strategy: breakdown of the digital PR campaign

Step 1: Brainstorming the topic

As an AI tool, WriterBuddy was the perfect source to develop industry AI reports or stats.

Every second (Yes, every second counts!), the world of AI is heating up. Major players like OpenAI, Microsoft, and Google hit the headlines daily. But who else is in the game?

Our team set out to explore this question and went through AI-related studies, whitepapers, and reports. In addition, we paid close attention to tech journalism to identify a knowledge gap in the AI industry.

Based on our research, we crafted a set of questions to investigate the state of AI investments, including:

  • How much are corporate investors willing to risk with AI technology?
  • Which companies are receiving the most significant investments in the AI industry?

The AI wave has Reporters itching to cover AI-related topics.

But they often lack data, resources, and credible sources. We saw this as an opportunity for us to create a world-class content piece like an infographic that journalists want to quote and use in their articles.

Step 2: Data-driven research studies

To answer the above questions, we researched over 10,000 AI companies and their funding data between 2015 and 2023. We sourced these data from trusted sources such as CrunchBase, NetBase Quid, S&P Capital IQ, and NFX.

Then we presented our findings in the form of an infographic. We kept the following in mind:

  • Careful consideration of design elements like color, data visualization, and branding
  • Ensuring that the infographic effectively communicates the intended message
  • Kept the visual looking clean and crisp to provide the reader with an excellent experience.

The following is the Infographic we created for

Step 3: Identifying relevant journalists

We used media database tools to identify and compile a list of relevant journalists covering the AI and tech industry. We looked for journalists who have previously covered AI technology, data analytics, and funding rounds.

Step 4: Crafting a pitch and outreach

Once we had a list of industry journalists, we crafted a clear pitch that explained the study, our findings, and why it was relevant to their audience. We personalized the pitch for each journalist, highlighting their previous work in this area and explaining why we thought our story would interest them.

💡 Expert Link-building tip: If you want to build the best links in the world, stop looking at the process as an SEO technique. Start looking at it like this:  “How can we offer so much value that the journalist wants to link to us?”

After execution, the results started to kick in. We continued to monitor results, and as we had new data daily, we continued optimizing our email campaign by re-using elements that got the most responses.

Business impact of the digital PR campaign

Are you curious about how we successfully elevated our clients’ business? This is a tour specially arranged for you. We are sharing the visual demonstration of how the results in Ahrefs and Google Search Console changed after we did this campaign.

Ahrefs SEO Stats as of February 10th

Above is a screenshot of their Ahrefs SEO stats on February 10th.  There are only 16 organic Keywords, 286 Backlinks, and 83 referring domain RD, and the DR is just 0.2 with 0 Organic traffic.

Ahrefs SEO Stats as of 1st June 2023
And look at the stats now! As of 1st June 2023 , the organic traffic is 15.9K (actual on GA is ~30k/m). If you’ve ever tried building an SEO campaign from scratch, you’ll know how valuable this result is.
Google Analytics stats as of 1st June 2023

Here are other key stats:

  1. The monthly traffic value increased by $3100/mo. In under 4 weeks. As SEO is (usually) a long-term game, this is bound to grow even more – so the ROI of the campaign over the long term will be 10, 20, or 50x (depending on the measured time-frame) — and that’s only in SEO value. PR backlinks also bring a lot of value in brand trust, conversions & reputation.
  2. Check the number of clicks and impressions on February 10. It clearly shows that the website was still in its early stages, and it would take years of dedication to get it moving. But the next image might surprise you (if you haven’t had enough already!).
Google Analytics stats as of 1st June 2023

On May 3 alone, there were 886 clicks (in a day) with 23,194 impressions!

And don’t forget: This was in a competitive B2B market, where competitors like have over $100m in funding. (Crunchbase)

In a less competitive market, these results would be enough to secure huge amounts of market share.

We’re thrilled by our incredible progress in such a short period. However, the true potential of this campaign extends far beyond our initial achievements.

We firmly believe that what we’ve accomplished is just the tip of the iceberg regarding impact. With Google’s diligent crawl bots continually exploring, the authority of our client’s website will only soar as these high-quality editorial backlinks multiply. And the exciting part?

You can expect a fascinating Case Study shortly, revealing how these editorial backlinks drive an exponential surge in organic traffic. So, buckle up and stay tuned for the remarkable journey ahead!

“But how much is this going to cost me”

We were more than happy with the outcome of this campaign in terms of cost. It is one of the most impressive aspects of this campaign that will surely surprise you.

According to Ahrefs, the “average backlink” costs $361. And they also say most sites over DR60 don’t sell backlinks.

Average link cost according to Ahrefs

This means: “The average backlink” in Ahrefs’ study had a much lower DR than 70. So, for 44 DR60+ backlinks, according to them, the ‘total’ pricing would be 44*$620= $27280.

Thanks to our infographic campaign, it has been featured on sites like TechCrunch, PCMag, MSN, The Week, and more. As you’ve gone through this case study, you’ll agree that the backlinks we landed for WriterBuddy were way above average. To be exact, our campaign’s average DR of a backlink was 70+.

And our whole campaign (with an average DR of 70+) only cost the client $10,000. Let’s do the sum now.

The average for our campaign was $10,000÷44= $227

Yes, this is how much the client paid per link.

Our cost per link was almost 40% lower than the average price, yet we built the best links in the world.

We know that sounds crazy for a campaign, but it’s true!

How is this possible

We simply focus on creating world-class content, putting it in front of the right journalists, and pitching angles with current trends in mind.

This enables us to land not only the initial links, but also a compounding effect of more journalists, industry experts, and publishers quoting our clients.

Ultimately leading to more links, which brings our cost per link down.

And again, these are NOT paid backlinks – earned through real PR plus world-class content.
